Basically there are 2 types of door closers:
1. Surface mounted door closers are by far the most common type. They are distinguished predominantly by the way they are mounted and are popular due to ease of installation by the contractor (on site) and are generally chosen due to budget restrictions.
Mounting types:
Surface mounted closers are obtrusive and aesthetically none of them will win a beauty contest as they exude an institutional look. They should be used where they are not generally seen such as Fire stairwells or underground car parks. Contractors often persuade architects and owners to settle for an exposed closer because they are easy to install and cost less in materials and labour. There are certain applications that require an exposed closer, some automatic door options and where a refurbishment or retro-fit project requires a relatively simple installation process.
2. Concealed door closers - The choice of Architects and Interior Designers
They are aesthetically pleasing as they are hidden from view. Each type of concealed door closer has its merits and as such you need to select the concealed closer best suited to your specific type of door and installation.

Square faceplate
Concealed transom closers are absolutely ideal for large aluminium framed or patch glass doors. Perfect for shopfitting, both double and single action doors. Little floor preparation needed. The majority of preparation should be accomplished by the fabricator prior to installation, leaving minimal on-site work. N.B. The cost per door must include all the necessary accessories. $$$$
CONCEALED DOOR CLOSERS
Concealed floor spring closers are the most versatile for heavy duty double and single action doors and capable of controlling up to 300 kg interior or exterior doors. Ideal for office block entrance doors and all interior toughened glass office doors where there is 60mm+ space for the cement case in the floor. There are many configurations to suit most applications. Our Consultant specifier recommends the Dorma BTS80 series. These features come at a price. $$$$$

Semi-Concealed closers were the first foray into enclosing a door closer in the door leaf and for many years were the most popular hidden closer with architects and designers. Some can be used in fire doors when installed with the approved intumescent gaskets. They need to be part of the door pre-fabrication process and are not suitable for refurbishment or retro-fitting. The door face needs to be cut away and a large channel morticed into the frame. Can be mounted in frame header. $$$
Fully Concealed jamb mounted closers have become the favourite with architects and designers for integrated door control. Approved for use in fire doors. Can be installed on-site or can be part of the door pre-fabrication process. Suitable for refurbishment or retro-fitting. Easy installation for contractors. Has the functions of an exposed closer but is invisible. The Astra Door Controls series of closers are the best value for money jamb mounted door closers available $$
